In the past, working with fur was done with a knife made from a saw, or the trapper found his own version of a knife. But all these homemade tools were crude and did not allow to achieve the quality that a trapper professional wanted. Thus, the masters discovered the furrier's knife, which satisfied them both in terms of ergonomics and quality of work with fur.
The homemade and crude skinning knives were replaced by blade holders, which, thanks to their razor blade, allow for a neat cut.
